Air Culture.
Since long ago, the people of Alenta have learned to get around in the air. Even primitive cultures know how to tame winged beasts and globulars, allowing them to travel from palenque to palenque.
The aeroship is the most common means of transport: a boat propelled by sails and elevated by a gas balloon. Alenta's culture is closely tied to its atmosphere.
The storms, maelstroms, (gigantic funnels of air from which it is said that nothing escapes) and gigantic predators are feared and respected.
The air is a hostile environment, therefore expert pilots and navigational charts depicting secure commercial routes are highly valued.
The palenques are rugged and dangerous, therefore colonists are constantly searching for peaceful islands to settle on. The enormous distances and slow communication foment disorder, smuggling, piracy and even the hunting of slaves.
